SALA2016 Comes to Gawler
The South Australian Living Artists Festival (or SALA as it is known) is on again, and this year the Gawler SALA Art Trail has more artists and more venues than ever before.
Established in 1998 with the aim of promoting and celebrating the many talented artists within our state, the SALA festival has become the largest and possibly the most innovative community based arts festival in Australia. Held every year throughout August, the festival showcases our state’s visual artists through exhibitions in galleries, shops, cafes – nearly anywhere people can congregate and appreciate art.
Since 2013 the Gawler Business Development Group has been supporting the Gawler SALA Art Trail, which combines the efforts of artists, the support of Council, and the contributions of local businesses to bring the SALA Festival to town. In 2016 there are eleven venues and a range of artists contributing to the trail.
This year’s trail was officially launched at the Institute on Thursday night by a range of speakers, including Mayor of Gawler, Karen Redman, Louise Drummond, Chair of the Gawler Business Development Group, and Joanne Hughes, Gawler Community Gallery Vice President, who all stressed the important part that art can play in the cultural and economic development of Gawler.
