Vale Sidney “Sid” Ey 1916 – 2019
We are saddened to hear of the passing of Sidney “Sid” Ey.
Our heart goes out to Sid’s family and friends at this difficult time. The world has changed so much since Sid was born last century and yesterday our world changed again. Today we feel the loss of a wonderful man and a pillar of our local community.
It was our pleasure to talk to Sid Ey for one of our oral histories, and we are glad that we were able to add his memories to our history and we hope the recordings he left help his spirit and contribution to live on.
Sid was born in, and lived his entire life in Gawler. In his younger years he attended Gawler Primary School, while later he worked with his father at the chaff mill on Murray St (where Coles now stands) and played tennis for the Tod St Tennis Club.
We were lucky enough to interview Sid about his incredible experiences as a Field Ambulance Officer during WWII, where he served in Egypt and Libya, becoming one of the “Rats” of Tobruk where his bravery in rescuing and tending to his injured comrades was unquestioned.
