Monkey: Series one, episode 6; Even Monsters Can Be People

Welcome to the Classic Cult TV Club, (CCtvC), with Justin, Lisa, Mackenzie, Angus, Baylor and Janette.

Originally broadcast on Nippon TV Japan between October 1978 and May 1980 and then dubbed and released in the U.K, Australia and New Zealand from 1979. Shown on the ABC before Dr Who on a weeknight is it no wonder that Monkey quickly established itself as a cult classic.

Based upon the 16th Century Chinese novel, Journey to the West attributed to Wu Cheng’en  and based upon or derived from popular folk tales, Monkey or Journey to the West is one of many adaptations of these beloved stories.

Monkey played by Masaaki Sakai, Tripitaka by Mansako Natsume, Sandy by Shiro Kishbe and Pigsy by Toshiyuki Nishida. The English Dub was directed by David Weir and voiced by David Collings, (Monkey) Maria Warburg, (Tripitaka) Gareth Armstrong, (Sandy) and Peter Woodthorpe, (Pisgy)

So what do the culters make of this Cult Classic. How well or otherwise has it aged?
